Diversification of Industry in Tropical Queensland: Food as a Tourism Industry
Scholarship Description
Economies of North Queensland need to diversify in sustainable ways to provide livelihoods for the population. Food as a key destination pull factor is a reflection of the growing interest in food. Studies showed that visitors to Cairns classed themselves as food tourists but were not aware the region had a food industry based on seafood, dairy & fruit. Identified problems with developing local food tourism include seasonality and the distribution system. It is apparent that the region has potential to develop food tourism but a range of issues need to be examined. This PhD will examine difficulties in building a regional food & wine tourism brand using case study methodology to compare Tropical Queensland as a potential food region with other established food and wine regions in Australia. A background in tourism and business research is preferred. Stipend: $22,500 pa tax free + $7,000 project support (one off) Contact: Prof Bruce Prideaux bruce.prideaux@jcu.edu.au (07) 4042 1039
